Laguna Morales
The Laguna Morales is located in the state of Tamaulipas. It communicates to the Almagre Swamp and the Soto River, which ends its journey in the Gulf of Mexico. The area bears great importance among the sporting and traditional fishing communities. The lagoon registers temperatures ranging from 19.5 to 32.5 C in January and July respectively, and salinity levels varying from 5 to 64 ppt. Morales hosts a great variety of ichthyoplankton material, represented by approximately 19 families such as Elopidae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Gobiidae and Gobiesocidae among others. Gobiidae, is the most diverse with four genus and six species. Other species are Elops saurus, Harengula jaguana, Opisthonema oglinum and Anchoa hepsetus, to name a few. Ducks Unlimited de Mexico A.C. DUMAC recently carried out a project to map and inventory the wetlands of various areas of Mexico, and Morales was of especial interest because of its importance as a bird habitat.
