Laguna Grande

Laguna Grande
From: Castañeda and Contreras, 2001

Laguna Grande is composed by two water bodies, Laguna Chica and Laguna Grande, which are connected to the Gulf of Mexico through a channel that joins the mouth of the Calipe River. The lagoon is a shallow system with warm, oligohaline and turbid waters, with a sandy and limo-clayey bottom where species like Littoridina sphinctostoma, Cyrenoida floridana, Neritina reclivata, Mytilopsis leucophaeata, Neritina virginea, Macoma tenta and Mulinia lateralis are abundant. Molluscs and arthropods (crustaceans) are the best represented in the system. There are thirty-six species of molluscs equally divided among the Gastropoda and Bivalvia classes, with the Gastropoda surpassing the number of individuals.

It is surrounded by mangroves composed of Rhizophora mangle, which is the dominant specie with a density of 55.6 percent, followed by Avicennia germinans and Laguncularia racemosawith a 26.0 percent and 18.3 percent density respectively. The community presents a pattern of distribution that belongs to the basin mangrove and the bank mangrove types around the streams’ mouths that empty into the lagoon.
