Laguna San Agustin

Laguna San Agustin
From: Castaneda and Contreras, 2001

Laguna San Agustin is located in the municipality of Alto Lucero on the coast of the state of Veracruz, Mexico. It connects to the Gulf of Mexico through the San Agustin Bar. Its waters are characterized by a thermohaline relation (between salinity and temperature), as well as a heterogeneous system throughout the year. Salinity in the lagoon is considered moderate polyhaline.

Phytoplankton is more abundant in number during the winter months, being represented by twenty-one families, where eight species are the most representative, led by Biddulpha sp, and Girosigma ballica. Among the zooplankton, the cyclopoids and calanoids are the predominant groups, showing greater distribution in the lagoon throughout the year. In addition, crustaceans like the crab Callinectes rathbunae are abundant during the months of April and July registering a greater ratio of females versus males. In general, areas located close to the mouth of the lagoon present great diversity and abundance of habitat.
