From: USFW, 1982; ANEP, 2003

Timbalier-Terrebonne Bay system is a complex array of small embayments, bayous, marshlands and islands located between the Atchafalaya River and Bayou Lafourche just west of the Mississippi River Delta. The Terrebone and Timbalier Bays compose the majority of the open water habitat; other open water areas include Lake Pelto, Lake Barre, Lake Raccourci, Lake Felicity, Jacko Bay and Old Lady Lake. Terrebone Bay and Lake Pelto are separated from the Gulf by Timbalier Island to the east and the Isles Dernieres to the west. Water exchange takes place mostly via Wine Island, Cat Island and Whiskey Passes.

Along with Barataria Bay, Timbalier-Terrebonne Bay has been designated an estuary of national significance by the Environmental Protection Agency. The area is home to over 730 bird species, finfish, shellfish, reptiles, amphibians and mammals whilst the estuary contains about 32,000 square km of forested wetlands and 1500 square km of freshwater marshes.
