Weeks Bay
Weeks Bay is located between Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida. It is a small estuarine embayment averaging a depth of 1.4 m and a drainage area of almost 510 sq. km. Weeks Bay, together with the Pelican and Bon Secour Bays form part of the larger Mobile Bay System. Sources of freshwater drainage into the bay include the Magnolia and Fish Rivers. Saltwater is received from the Gulf of Mexico through Mobile Bay. Extensive forested wetlands, marshes and swamps characterize the Weeks Bay system. The area also provides nursery for fish, crustaceans and shellfish. Weeks Bay has been designated as a National Estuarine Research Reserve and an Outstanding National Water Resource. Features in the reserve include nature trails, board walk trails that are handicapped-accessible, and an interpretive center for displaying historical, archaeological, live and preserved specimens that are indigenous to the Mobile Bay-Weeks Area.
