First Map Showing the Gulf of Mexico, 1500

Juan de la Cosa utilized information from the voyages of Columbus (1492, 1493, 1498), Vespucci (1497, 1498), and Cabot (1497, 1498) to create this map of the new world. The Gulf of Mexico is clearly visible on this chart although it is not named and is partially covered by an inset drawing.

Reproduced from: Humboldt, Alexander von. 1836-39. Examen critique de l'histoire de la géographie du nouveau continent, et des progrès de l'astronomie nautique aux 15me et 16me siècles. 5 vols., 4 fold. maps. Paris.
