Mexico is privileged with the presence of several types of ecosystems, making it one of the five countries with highest biological diversity. The elevated genetic variability deserves special consideration and gives impulse to efforts by government, non-government and academic organizations for the preservation of biodiversity. For this reason the International Meeting on the Problematic, Knowledge and Conservation of Biodiversity took place in February 1992, by convocation of the President of Mexico. This meeting gave origin to the Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad (CONABIO), on March 16, 1992. CONABIO has the objective of approving projects and studies on the knowledge and use of biodiversity, give assistance to government and other sectors, conduct special projects, disseminate knowledge on biological richness, give continuity to international collaborative agreements and do public services.
