The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), formerly the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI), began as a small field station founded by the University of Florida in March 1955 at the Maritime Training Base on Bayboro Harbor, in St. Petersburg. It is a division of the State's Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). FWRI conducts applied research and provides synthesized information that addresses marine resource management issues. The FWRI Strategic Plan 2002 represents the combined efforts of its dedicated staff and the contributions of hundreds of resource managers, customers of their research, and public and private stakeholders. Together, they have created a framework for guiding FWRI's ongoing research and planning efforts. FWRI initiated a statewide dialogue on the strategies necessary to create sustainable marine and estuarine environments. It strives to provide the best support possible for policy and management decision-making by the FWC and its Commissioners. Considering the diversity of Florida's marine resources and the magnitude of challenges that are faced, this is a formidable task.
