The mission of the Instituto de Biologia of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México is to catalogue the species diversity of flora and fauna of Mexico, to understand their evolutionary relationships, to characterize and understand the mechanisms responsible for their current and past distribution, and ultimately, to elucidate the processes responsible for biological diversity.

The scientific and technical staff of the Instituto de Biología has the privilege and enormous responsibility of maintaining and developing the National Collections of Flora and Fauna. Due to this task and the still limited knowledge of the Mexican flora and fauna, it is desirable and highly justified for the Institute to have classical taxonomy as its central study line, accompanied by a focus on the understanding of the origin, interrelationships and evolution of biodiversity in Mexico.
