The Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografía e Informática (INEGI) has the function of coordinating the National Statistical and the Geographic Information Systems of Mexico, in addition to promoting and orienting the informatics development in the country. To meet this function, the institute has substantially enhanced its ability of receiving and disseminating information through the collaboration of professional staff, use of technology, and presence in the 32 federal units of the Mexican Republic. INEGI was created by a presidential decree in 1983 and incorporated the general directions of Statistics (founded in 1882) and Geography (founded in 1968), becoming an institution with long tradition in capturing, processing and disseminating statistical and geographic information about Mexico.
