Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA)

© 2005 Gulf of Mexico Alliance
The Gulf of Mexico Alliance is a regional partnership among the U.S. Gulf of Mexico States (Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas) formed in 2004 to bring collaboration to a new level to improve the health of the Gulf of Mexico. The Alliance also includes participation and coordination by EPA’s Gulf of Mexico Program and the Gulf of Mexico States Accord. The U.S. Ocean Action Plan includes many actions affecting the Gulf, including 8 actions specifically mentioning it. The Plan recognizes the leadership that the Gulf States have demonstrated (Gulf of Mexico Alliance). The Alliance has five priorities as a starting point for action, with anticipated expansion to other important issues in the future after the Alliance has made progress on these issues:
1. Reductions in nutrient loading
2. Improving Gulf water quality, with emphasis on beaches and shellfish beds
3. Restoration of coastal wetlands
4. Identification of Gulf habitats to inform management
5. Gulf of Mexico environmental education
