Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN)
While most stranded mammals are not found alive, they still provide valuable information for research and education programs. Data collected by TMMSN volunteers is helping to fill the gaps in basic information about the life and biology of cetaceans, and particularly about dolphins. The tissues archive and data collected, stored and shared with biologists around the world, including the national network at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., would be difficult, if not impossible, to obtain by any other means. As detailed research findings continue to be distributed world-wide, the program has become known around the world as one to emulate.
Type of Organization: Marine Research Center or Laboratory Sector: Non-governmental Organization Main Field of Focus: Understanding and Conserving Marine Mammals that Strand along the Texas Gulf Coast Year Created: 1980 Contact Person: Cowan, Daniel
