The Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas was founded on October 30th, 1950, with the establishment of the Law and Medicine Colleges in Tampico. They were administrated by a civil association called “Professional Education of Tampico”. Shortly thereafter, on November 8th of the same year, they were recognized as official schools, with the specification that they would follow the guidelines of the academic principles of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. The current Universidad de Tamaulipas is directed by a statute approved by the university board on November 5th, 1972, where total autonomy of the university is established and is capacity for auto-governing is specified.

It currently comprise several other academic units, including science, education, agriculture, ecology, commerce and administration, music, veterinary and animal husbandry, nursing and medicine, among others.
