Dr. Ditty is a Research Fishery Biologist with the Fishery Ecology Branch, NOAA Fisheries Service, in Galveston, Texas. He has been involved with marine, coastal and estuarine ecosystem research for over 25 years on a variety of research topics including larval fish taxonomy, ecology, habitat and nursery requirements, distribution and abundance, and seasonal occurrence of fish larvae. He is particularly interested in taxonomy and identification of early life stages of fish and shrimp, the most vulnerable stages, to effects of habitat alteration, pollution and wetland loss. Recent research has included studies of essential fish habitat and utilization of oil and gas platforms as nursery areas for larvae and juveniles of reef-associated fishes. Current research involves the role of ontogeny in settlement and recruitment of young to nursery areas. Since development is a highly synchronized event involving multiple anatomical and morphological systems, the timing of developmental changes has important implications for survival and recruitment.
