Dr. Rainer Bleck

Dr. Bleck, a synoptic meteorologist by training, spent the early part of his career developing weather prediction models that use potential temperature (entropy) as vertical coordinate. More recently, Dr. Bleck has extended the isentropic coordinate idea to ocean circulation models. His principal achievement in this area is HYCOM (hybrid coordinate ocean model). He is presently using HYCOM, coupled to the NASA/GISS atmospheric general circulation model, to assess the impact of greenhouse gas accumulation on global climate. Dr. Bleck is also participating at NOAA/ESRL in the development of FIM, an atmospheric model discretized horizontally on a global icosahedral grid and vertically on a hybrid-isentropic coordinate.
