My research focuses on the structure and function of microbial communities as they relate to the biogeochemical cycles within coastal sediments. Bacterial and archaeal respiration are the driving factors in eutrophication and increasing hypoxia. I use a multi-faceted approach of metabolomics and transcriptomics to examine the intermediate products of microbial metabolism in order to characterize the interactions of organisms in their environment.
