Dr. Eschmeyer is Curator Emeritus in the Ichthyology Department at the California Academy of Sciences.

His research has focused on the fish family Scorpaenidae, and he has published many papers on their taxonomy and systematics.

Another of his major contribution to Ichthyology has been The Catalog of Fishes, the most comprehensive online database and resource on fishes. Eschmeyer has traveled the world to visit all major fish collections, and scanned over 34,000 references to compile a list of about 60,000 fish species names and over 10,000 genera. The Catalog has been continuously updated for over 30 years, with monthly updates, and continues to be an important resource that is widely used by scientists worldwide.
