Mariel Bay is located on the North coast of Cuba in the province of La Habana. It is located 40 km West of the city of La Habana, with its waters connecting to the Gulf of Mexico. On the East side of the bay a port, a cement works factory and a power station are located. On the West side of the bay, a former submarine base is located, which now exists as a free trade zone.

In 1980, some 120,000 Cubans illegally journeyed to Florida. Most left from the Cuban port of Mariel, which gave the operation its name: The Mariel Boatlift.
