The establishment of the American Water Resources Association was the result of both a vision and a determination on the part of a civil engineer, Dr. Sandor C. Csallany, and a librarian, Dr. Icko Iben. The dream of AWRA became a reality in 1964 with the major objective of fostering a program of information exchange between professionals in water related disciplines.

The American Water Resources Association is an organization of professionals and lay persons which provides a common forum to exchange information and ideas, to promote technological, social, economic and legislative advances, and to collect and disseminate information an all aspects of water resources research, management and education through publications, symposia, and other media. It furthermore serves as a communication vehicle between members and the public, and promotes cooperation with Federal, State, and local agencies, private firms and other organizations concerned with water resources.
