Biology supports a vigorous, contemporary research program that spans a range of disciplines. The mission of the Department is to advance the understanding and appreciation of biology within the State of Texas and globally. A major emphasis of our program is to encourage critical thinking and an active engagement in the biological sciences. We have nationally recognized research programs in Ecology, Evolution, Herpetology and Aquatic and Marine Biology.

Research in Ecology at UTA encompasses a wide variety of organisms in a diversity of ecosystems. We address questions at the population, community, and ecosystem levels and collaborate with researchers in other disciplines, both within UTA and beyond. Faculty and students in our group use mathematical modeling, statistical techniques, controlled laboratory experiments, and long-term field studies to examine basic and applied ecological concepts.
