The mission of the Instituto Oceanográfico del Golfo y Mar Caribe (Oceanographic Institute of the Gulf and Caribbean Sea) is to perform oceanographic research, including hydrographic, biological, meteorological and environmental protection studies. These studies are expected to serve as the technical basis for decision-making regarding: planning and execution of oceanographic activities in the case of sever meteorological phenomena in the area; establishment of strategies for combating and preventing marine contamination; supervision of activities developed by other educational institutions; research activities inside de Marine National Park of the Veracruz Reef System.

Research activities conducted by the Institute include:

  • Marine dynamics and coastal processes on the coast between Tecolutla, Veracruz and Tabasco
  • Inventory of the biological resources in the area
  • Updating of nautical charts
  • Monitoring and detection of marine pollution levels
  • Meteorological and climatic studies
  • Research cruises using research vessels from the Mexican fleet
  • Identification of sensitive areas and endangered species, for preparation of a national contingency plan for combating harmful chemical spills
