Launched in 1989, ReefGuardian International (RGI) is a U.S. tax-exempt public interest membership organization exclusively dedicated to the worldwide protection of coral reefs and their marine life. Key ongoing campaigns include preventing burial of coral hard bottoms by beach renourishment, eliminating the use of indiscriminate wire-mesh fish traps, preempting offshore oil and gas activities near coral reefs, protecting spawning aggregations of depleted snappers and groupers, ensuring abundant reef fish populations and sustainable reef fisheries, stopping ship groundings and anchoring on coral reefs in marine parks, and establishing coral reef marine protected areas.

RGI activities include policy development, grassroots organization, agency monitoring, science-based advocacy, technical assistance, and public awareness. Through its ReefGuardian Network, RGI facilitates and coordinates the pursuit of coral reef conservation advocacy by over 300 Network groups. Through its Reef Technical Assistance Program (ReefTap), RGI assists coral reef conservation activists worldwide.
