Ms. Fertl is a marine mammal biologist with more than 25 years of experience with cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and issues affecting them (e.g., fishery interactions, effects of oil and gas exploration and development activities, including noise and explosives, naval exercise training impact assessment). Her research interests lie in the realm of natural history and behavioral ecology of marine protected species (such as marine mammals and sea turtles) and the impacts of human activities on these animals. Ms. Fertl has 20 years of experience in National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation. She has also been involved in many outreach efforts to educate the public about marine mammals. Ms. Fertl has published over 40 articles and book chapters in the peer-reviewed literature, as well as two children's non-fiction books (one on wolves and their relatives, the other on bears).
