Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, as well as a Research Associate of the Academy's Ichthyology Department.

Dr. Cohen centered his research on the taxonomy of deep-sea salmoniform, gadiform and ophidiiform fishes. He was a professor of biology at the University of Florida for one year, a systematic zoologist for the U.S. Bureau of Commerical Fisheries Ichthyological Laboratory in Washington, D.C. for 23 years. After his stint with the Bureau, Dr. Cohen returned to California as Chief Curator of Life Sciences at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. He eventually became Deputy Director for Research and Collections until his retirement in 1995.
