Dr. Schmidly was the former 20th President of University of New Mexico between 2007 and 2012. Before that, he was the 17th President at the Oklahoma State University and CEO of the OSU system on January 16, 2003.

Previously he served as President of Texas Tech University (2000-2003). He spent 25 years at Texas A&M University including five years as CEO of the Galveston Campus and six years as head of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences.

Dr. Schmidly is a respected naturalist and conservationist with more than 100 scientific publications and seven books, mostly about Texas and Mexican mammals. He earned a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Illinois following bachelor and masters degrees from Texas Tech. He is a native of Levelland, Texas.
