Associate Professor, Department or Environmental Toxicology

Dr. Ernest Smith works in TIEHH's Analytical and Biochemical Toxicology Research Section, which focuses on the analytical characterization of exposure to environmental contaminants and the development of biomarkers of contaminant exposure and effect. Dr. Smith also works with the TIEHH's Division of Human Health Sciences, which studies the etiological role of various environmental toxicants in pathogenesis of acute and chronic human diseases to determine adverse effects of environmental toxicants on humans and to design effective prevention strategies for reducing human diseases risks linked to exposure to environmental toxicants. Dr. Smith has studied perchlorate's risk to wildlife and the environment. Specifically, Dr. Smith has studied perchlorate in water, perchlorate in West Texas milk, and the effects of in utero and lactational exposure to ammonium perchlorate on developing deer mice.
