Dr. Chia was a marine biologist who had an extensive knowledge on echinoderms.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Chia taught at seven universities throughout the world; among them, he spent 24 years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He retired from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1997.
