My research focuses on the ecological dynamics of marine invertebrates with an emphasis on the interactions between biological and physical processes. My current primary current interests center on the ecological modeling of marine infectious diseases. Yet, the concepts and models developed for terrestrial examples are not specifically transferable to aquatic ecosystems because of fundamental differences in community structure, species diversity, life-history phenomena and dispersal mechanisms. Aquatic ecosystems consist of complex relationships among hosts and pathogens that challenge traditional views of disease processes. A better understanding of marine disease dynamics is essential to evaluate the influence of anthropogenic and climatological drivers stimulating the spread and intensification of marine diseases.
