Ileana ESPEJEL teaches in a master’s program within the department of sciences at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, where she trains students to work across disciplines to solve environmental and conservation. In addition, she heads two research projects dealing with applied ecology, land use and regional planning of coastal ecosystems. She serves as an advisor to both researchers and students on integrating interdisciplinary thinking into their research. She also is part of a consultant team that advises federal and state government agencies on regional planning strategies.

Espejel has shared much of her research at seminars in the United States and México and has published articles in her field. Her Ph.D. thesis was focused on 'Studies on coastal sand dune vegetation of the Yucatan Peninsula'.
