Primary research interests are the ecology and ecophysiology of coastal wetland forests. Included are issues concerning forest sustainability and productivity and restoration of wetland forests. Wetland forest restoration problems, especially questions related to stress tolerance in flooded, saline, or toxic environments are of particular concern. Recent work involved chairing the Louisiana Governor's Science Working Group on Coastal Wetland Forest Conservation and Use.
