Dr. McEachran is a Professor Emeritus of Ichthyology at Texas A&M University, and Chief Curator and Curator Emeritus of Fishes at the Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collection. His research interests entail the systematics, phylogeny, zoogeography, and evolutionary biology of skates and rays (Chondrichthyes: Batoidea), systematics of the Neotropical Heterandria (Pisces: Poeciliidae), and systematics and biogeography of fishes of the Gulf of Mexico (Preparation of a book on the species of fishes in the Gulf of Mexico is in progress).
