Dr. Waters is a professor of Zoology at University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.

His research interests include:
-Extinction and recolonization - ancient DNA
-Rates of molecular evolution
-Kelp-Rafting and Southern Ocean biogeography
-Freshwater phylogeography and drainage evolution
