Dr. Benson is a retired professor of Physics and Astronomy. He was the Director of the Center for Bioacoustics at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

In 2009, Dr. Benson started his own publishing company, R&K Benson.

In 1994, Dr. Benson co-authored "Distribution and abundance of marine mammals in the north-central and western Gulf of Mexico"
