Marilyn Barrett-O'Leary and her work to control invasive non-indigenous species in the Gulf of Mexico Region was one of several 2001 Gulf Guardian award winners from around the Gulf that was recognized at the Southern States Environmental Conference, held in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Marilyn Barrett-O'Leary has extensive experience in outreach and coordination of invasive species issues in the Southeastern and Gulf of Mexico Region. She is a member of the Gulf and South Atlantic Regional ANS Panel and the Mississippi River Basin Regional ANS Panel. Recently she coordinated development of aquatic invasive species management plans in 14 southeastern states under the umbrella of the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership. Barrett-O'Leary is retired from the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program at Louisiana State University, and is working with many groups as an independent contractor. Through the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership, she coordinates some projects under NOAA Community Based Restoration Program, and the National Fish Habitat Initiative. She works on ANS with the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program.
