Management and Integral Use of Native Species (Crab Callinectes rathbunae, Mayan Cichlid Cichlasoma urophthalmus, Common Snook Centropomus undecimalis and Yucatan Molly Poecilia velifera): Conservation of Resources through Aquaculture

This aquaculture project, proposed by the fisheries sector, arose from the necessity to develop alternatives that would lead to the improvement of the quality of life, conservation of the resources and aquatic diversity of the region, and sustainable use of these resources by diminishing the fishing pressure that currently exists.

With these objectives in mind, an aquaculture model was developed using a coastal lagoon. The development of this project intends to ensure the real protection of this body of water from the users, while allowing its use as a source of permanent sustenance.

This alternative project of integral cultivation of the Mayan cichlid, common snook, crab and Yucatan molly in Atasta Lagoon aims at fomenting the recovery of threatened species of extinction, diminishing the fishing pressure on the wild populations of the species to be managed, and achieving a sustainable use of the aquatic biodiversity, as well as the conservation of its habitats.
