As presently treated, this species encompasses two genetically distinct, apparently allopatric populations, both endemic to the Gulf of Mexico; their distributions break in the Chenier plain region of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (Staton and Felder 1995, Bilodeau et al. 2005).
