Guţu (1996a) considered the generic name Pagurotanais Bourvier, 1918, inappropriate because the contained the stem “tanais” for an apseudomorphan taxon, and accordingly he provided the new generic name Pagurolanis for the western Atlantic species Pagurotanais bouryi Bouvier, 1918 (type species); Pagurotanais guitari Gu¸tu and Gomez, 1976 <http://tidepool.st.usm.edu/tanaids/bibliogag.htm#Gutugomez1976>; and Pagurapseudes largoensis McSweeney, 1982; and for the northeastern Pacific species, Pagurapseudes laevis Menzies, 1953. Notwithstanding, in accordance with International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, Pagurotanais is a valid name, and it should be used for the genus of these three American species instead of Pagurolanis Gu¸tu, 1996a, which is a junior synonym.
