Dr. Salas-Monreal is a physical oceanographer working in the Marine Science Institute of the Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico. He has also worked at the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología (ICMyL), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he participated to obtain and process current data set of the Gulf of Mexico. He was a collaborator in a project on Current Patterns in the Veracruz Reef System National Park and their Effect on the Distribution of Plankton and Terrigenous Sediments. He has also been a research assistant in the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, USA, where he worked on several aspects of Chesapeake Bay, and also participated in oceanographic cruises in Central Amercian estuaries and Chilean Fiords. In 1999-2000 he was a Math Teacher, and he also collaborated with the National Meteorological Service (Mexico), running atmospheric models over the Valle de Mexico.

Dr. Salas-Monreal has been awarded several scholarships throughout his career. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Estuarine Research Federation (ERF), Union Geofisica Mexicana (UGM) and Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI-CONACYT). He has made numerous presentations in national and international conferences, and has published several papers in scientific journals.
